Notes on Reading

Making Analogs of Reality – Barry Hampe

Doc should be about people. They are the story. Story first then visuals.

Interviews tell the story (PBS style), but visuals show. Need pictures. Need structure.

Equipment doesn’t matter. The best equipment is not going to get your shot for you. You need to have a plan going in so that you know what you need to shoot. Setting up a camera and recording the whole event is not interesting. Editing can not save it.

Interviews can be static and boring. You need visuals to show what is going on. Just the facts questions make a good oral history, but a bad interview for a documentary.

Get your people to tell stories. Listen and follow where they go. Don’t do stupid camera moves while interviewing.
